hard work procrastinating

I'm writing this because I'm almost done with a drawing that took me about 4 hours, with many many breaks. Maybe it took me 2 hours. It was supposed to take me 6 hours, about, but there isn't much to copying a drawing and deconstructing the figures within it. I don't even like the painting. It's also about 3 x 5.5 feet. In crayon, too, because why the hell not? I want to draw from real people.


Yesterday, I went to animation club, and it was wonderful. This is where I want to be, and I want to do so much of it and work hard at this. These are people who know what I know and more. They give reason to my existence.


Once again, I was convinced that whatever the asian station in the cafeteria makes, it's going to be good. I don't want to know why, but I always end up eating actual vegetables. Thanks, Pratt, for sneaking peppers, squash, broccoli, watercress, etc into my asian food. And also rice. I have wooden chopsticks and a ricecooker in my room, so, I guess I really miss herricks.


I sort of wish I was doing more... hopefully I'll get real busy and won't have to say that again. But I can get 10 hours of sleep a night. I'll just have to keep a sketchbook.


The first three are platonic shapes, which is my 3D course, basically. Isocahedrons, cubes, octahedrons, dodecahedrons, and tetrahedrons. Fun fun fun. My current hw is to remake the first one, slightly larger, with more interesting external tabs (all the others have the tabs hidden inside).

I came from english class, and I need to write.


I like when you can feel the sharpness of the blade that made a smoothie. I like when the strawberry seeds are cut for you, and the pineapple flesh has been broken into juice and pulp. The peach fuzz has been broken down, and its texture becomes another layer. The ice that was once cubed has been transformed into cold. The strawberries become the texture's pink.


Well... the smoothies really are that good.


I just wanted to say something about working. I like college homework better than high school homework, because it teaches you how to properly manage time. I get a project and a week to do it. It's a step up from a worksheet and a night to do it, because then, you can only do your homework the night before it's due.

Figure drawings

Figure drawing today. I always find that the legs appear shorter than we think they should, but they really are that length. Except for the one where the legs are supposed to be like / \ if you see them from the side, but at this angle they are just ||. The one with one leg on the chair is my favorite.

LCD homework, interactions of color

Value (light - dark), Intensity (saturation), and Hue (the color it is). Each small piece of paper is affected by the field color around it, which changes a property of the color. This is straight out of Josef Albers.


You can really see how each color got changed through the camera lens. I have the most trouble judging intensity, because it often looks like value.


Done on color-aid paper, which is expensive, nasty, and doesn't agree with rubber cement.

The eggs. We set up paper over cardboard, to make a corner, and set up hard-boiled eggs and incandescent lights. Done in Caran d'ache,

I have more to do for homework, that involve reflecting light off color-aid paper surfaces.

The second day of Light, Color, Design.


I realized that it's very possible that the color problems (the assignments are set up as puzzles and problems, to be solved with color) may not scan well, photograph well, or be represented well in any way on a computer screen. That won't stop me from trying, but it's still not going to be 100% accurate.


First, these are the homework projects.
#1, 3 color-studies (not actual drawings) of the same scene, at different times of day, drawn outside. From left, morning, midday, night.
#2, A 6 x 6 grid, and text that's in relation to it. This is, approximately, the floor plan of my house, and the writing tells what the colors are for. The writing also visually contextualizes the house.
#3, A random 5 x 5 grid. This wasn't graded, because "random" is impossible, but it was used as part of the lesson.

These are from today. Technically, I did a lot more than these, but I don't have a camera yet to take pictures of my figure drawings.

1./2. Figure drawing was on the 4th floor, so I put the camera out the window and took pictures.

3. Girl with string in her hair (I thought it was really interesting), drawing, while the teacher was talking. We have to take notes on his lectures/critiques. It's fine, really, because it's reference. His hand formed the position on the left.

4. We started drawing and then a minute in he said 'stop, tear it out'. Then, we went over the drawings, and we were instructed about beginnings. Mine was pointed out and used as an example; you may be able to see the darker marks he made on the right hip, arm, ankle, and crotch.

5. LCD hw, drawing of the hedge, in midday. I may go over it to make the darks darker and to make the pinkish sidewalk have actual shadow.

6. Animal-drawings were part of our hw, and we put them on the walls and talked about how to start and structure a drawing. Magenta caran d'ache, aka super-special-expensive crayon.

I've had 2 figure drawing classes and 1 extra 3-hour session, and I need a new pad of newsprint.

kinds of art

I have a decent amount of homework to do. I want to sleep, so that I won't feel my woman-cramps till morning.


It looks like, at Pratt, people have their 'art' and they have that part of art that they don't really know. I think my art is Figure Drawing, or the artistic theory behind art. I'm lucky, because figure drawing is a class. A lot of kids don't have classes like that. Some are installation-makers, some are painters, some carve stone, some make jewelery. I think the part of art I don't know is the 3D art, because in drawing, i'm doing the opposite. I'm make 3D into 2D. It's a different way of thinking, and I'm going to see what happens.

Spider

There was a great spider in the port, and my family went into a house to see it. And my family turned into my cousins, and the house turned into my grandparent's. And my older cousin, she went to fight the giant spider. This thing was tearing down ships, and I knew the economy of the town wouldn't be the same. And then, when she didn't come back, a superhero tried to save the town. We thought he'd drowned the spider, but he was the one who drowned. The my little cousin puts on his under-water equipment, and told me that he's going to kill the spider, because of the town and because it killed his sister. And I watched from my grandparents' windows. And then, before he could reach the spider, I woke up.

Figure Drawing is the best! I love being actually taught figure drawing, not how to use charcoal or how to break things down into shapes. The professor has us write notes on Improving Accuracy through Process and Subject. He told us we could use anything we wanted the first day, so I took out my colored pencils and pens. No one else used that, though, everyone has charcoal. I asked him after class if he minded, and he said he would say something if it interfered with the actual drawing. I like being taught how to hold the pencil to work faster, or how to start a drawing. That's my homework. Starting drawings.


I'm going to see if I can borrow a camera to take pictures of the work, because everything is on 18" x 24" newsprint.
