bugzlabo

In writing my CalArts essay, I came to a wall: how can I describe myth in my life? Complete and total? Permeated my being? It's a presence, all the time, but it's not an obsession. I can think about my next meal and think about where I am in several quests in the same minute. It's not filtered as different.

This is a checklist for today.
Laundry.
Dinner.
Shower.
Post.
Type up some CalArts essay.
Copy and rewrite TEASe Me from previous post.
Come up with a couple of formats for the article.
Finish Neuroscience outline.
Type up B-Movie STAClive Commercial script.

Anyone ever heard of SimTunes? Before the Sim games of building houses and lives, there were Sim game, like SimLife and SimAnt, and SimTunes. SimTunes blends art and music by color-coding each note. Some of the example songs were pretty cool.

good tea, but i'll still have lipton in the morning

I'm getting a dog tomorrow!! His name is George, and he's a newfoundland, and he's not totally trained but that's okay and I can't wait. The house has been empty for too long.
edit: sometime next weekend. he still needs his vaccines and we need to get the right food and bowls.

In the last two days I have been to two very different teashops. This is the article, super-brief and without my notes, and I hope to touch on the same points for each place.
1. Tea and Sympathy, a very British tea shop with some very good food, and seats about 24. British high-brow teas, really too expensive for me. Real food, a real restaurant, just very small. I don't know where they cook it all. There are closets bigger than the kitchen. Don't miss its candy shop next door. Good for a small number of your closest and dearest, and be ready to pay city prices for real food, like pheasant and shepard's pie. If you can afford it, go right ahead. I'm just cheap. Mostly an older crowd.
4.50 for 3 cups in your own teacup, saucer, and small pot. Around the block from three train lines, in the West Village on Greenwich ave.

2. Witches Brew, the eternal living room of comfort. Even the ceilings are fabric. Tea and coffee, but I don't think it had meal-type food. After-meal desserts. It's about the tea, though. That was good, I'll be back for more tea and pie. Self-made menus are really not easy to read, but they look cool. Seasonal decor, soft lighting, soft everything. Normally for a younger crowd, but not for little kids.
2.75 for a small pot with your own tea, loose-leaf, about 2 or 3 small cups. West Hempstead. Not cheap, but it's a fair price for food that wasn't made in a microwave and some comfortable couch-space.
and from a few weeks ago:

3. MoJoe's Cafe, eclectic new york cafe right by Mineola train station, used to fast-pace. Looseleaf teas in hand-wrapped bags. Not just cupcakes, the cafe also has a full grill. The best thing, though, has to be the decor. It's an eclectic combinations of every decade since the 50s, including an original Donkey Kong arcade game. The first game Mario was in. Ever. And I don't think I mentioned the hand-drawn signs for everything. Has people from everywhere, especially with the train station and Winthrop hospital across the street. Don't get stuck on line when the shift ends at 4.
1.50 for a small cup of tea. Cheap in comparison, but it doesn't come with a pot, teacup, and saucer.

Feast on Boston Market

One of my goals this year is to build a suit of armor out of cardboard. This comes with all sorts of problems in a lot of different areas, which is what I want to solve. I don't usually work in the third dimension, either.
And today, I made a left vambrace, which is a fore-arm guard. And it fits. And I can't wait to make the other side.

STAC Nostalgia-Fest, 2009. Amazing. I realized, once again, that I was sitting sort of outside the 'group' But I was okay with that. Usually at parties I end up in a similar position. I was thinking about why I wasn't ecstatically hugging everyone, and then I realized that I didn't think of them as 'gone'. They were still part of stac because of our memories of them. They just moved to somewhere else. I wasn't surprised, I was more at ease. These are people I know. I'm comfortable around them.

This weekend is essay-writing and Rilke-reading. Describing myself in writing. Coherent, english writing.

Sketchbook page of armor-figurings. The legs are going to be interesting. I just realized that the left thigh is much longer than the right thigh in the main picture.

College is coming. did you bring your passion?

More characters, little vignette-drawings. Sonny-boy and Pompadour Princess. And a self-portrait, and it's coloring.

Wasn't a smiling day. Eh.

butter-battles and directions

Calarts wants an essay that asks what affects your art, how you do art, why apply to CalArts, and where do you want to go with your art. This essay can go anywhere. I have a few directions I would like to go in, and I don't think there's a wrong direction.

I've started writing my tea article, and I've been having a lot of fun describing teas as fuzzy, like a red, microwaved fruit, makes my brain heavy, sharper than a hard whistle. I don't know if that goes too far 'out', but I don't exactly have boundaries in the 'describing the senses with words' direction.

I showed up to opening night of the Dining Room painfully early, and was rightfully kicked out of the auditorium and into the hallway. The floor reflects everything and looks like an ocean, so I drew boats.

Sacred turkey

My grandpa did it. He ordered out thanksgiving. I was going to cook and bake and now it isn't sacred anymore. I realize that he's just 'taking care of the family', the old italian ideas, but still.

Seeing a show just takes everything out of me. Sitting still is juxtaposed against thinking frantically.

Goal for the day:
[x]  Write the start of a calarts essay. 9.15pm.
[ ]  Start outlining neuroscience chapter, copy and color diagrams.
[x]  Get the paint-pens to work. 2.50pm.
[ ]  Finish Thor vol2.
[x]  Make a pin-cushion. 3.15pm.

economical clown.

I was in the front row for a lecture about the correct uses of credit for buying expensive things. And I started drawing with my V7 Pilot, the smoothest pen that ever came close to a felt-tip. Part of the clown came from a painting in the Art section of the Times, which had an ad for Tim Burton at the MoMA.

I like the single lines that make up the suit. I like the cheeks. I'm not too fond of the hands, because I had to figure them out on my own, but I like the hair. I don't know what this style is. It's was made with Burton in the back of my mind, but some Schiele line quality. Is this the 'talking about art' part?
Magazine making. I feel better that I have work to do. We should argue more.
I kept going and got this.

I've been getting into cardboard. Today, I found a cardboard piece shaped like a life-size R2D2, which means I will be painting, in neon. I would love to have a glow-in-the-dark painting.

I also am collecting cardboard for a bigger project, a full suit of armor, made of cardboard. I hope I can get a trip to the Met Museum to take notes on armor. I've always loved knights and cardboard is cheap. I'll make plans, do research, and start after the children's show.

In my research thusfar, I have found The Cardboard Tube Fighting League. The world is a better place because this exists.
